Pastor Myers turned from fame & fortune in the hip hop music industry to a more
rewarding life of service and ministry for the Lord Jesus Christ. He is
especially gifted in working with youth. His practical teaching on how to live
the Christian life is a real blessing.
Chapter 1: 1990-93 B.C. (Before Christ)
It is the spring of 1992. I am a student at Virginia State University. I have
just been attacked by the entire football team in the college cafeteria. Of
course, the problem is over a female. She is the girlfriend of one of the
football players, and fellow student on campus. During a short breakup of
theirs, I became briefly involved with her. Nothing physical occurred between
us, but he was determined that something had.
He approaches me as I am getting my drink. We exchange hostile words. Though I
am at least 4 inches taller, he is at least 60 pounds heavier; he is a senior, I
am but a freshman. But I fear not. I have studied the martial arts for years.
I've also watched Bruce Lee on TV take out whole gangs. I issue challenging
words in response to his allegations and turning my back on him, I walk off.
Two minutes later, I hear a rumbling behind me, as I am seated talking with two
friends at my table. I turn just in time see him coming up behind me, reaching
for my neck. Jumping quickly to my feet, I assume my Bruce Lee “Jeet Kune Do”
stance, when I suddenly realize that he is accompanied by at least twenty
members of the team.
Today, I learn that life is not always what Hollywood makes it out to be. I am
now in the middle of a pile of fist flying football players. There's not much I
can do. Strangely enough, I don't suffer one blow. I do not yet understand
anything about the ministry of angels to attribute this blessing to them.
Finding myself outside the cafeteria within minutes of the attack, totally
unscathed, it's time to make phone calls. I am mad. By that night, Sean, my
younger brother, Rhoan, my 6 foot 8, 2 hundred and something pound brother,
along with about a hundred or so friends from the college and neighboring
Virginia Union campus storm the college grounds searching for a football team.
My brothers and I, all trained in the martial arts are ready to do damage.
This was normal life for me. In fact, it was part of the package. The hip-hop
culture had had its effect on me. Donning red dreadlocks, baggy pants, and
hooded shirts, I looked as rugged as one could. My friends and I would often end
up in gang fights, bragging and boasting afterwards from the thrill of the
event.
The last thing that occupied my mind was school. Music, girls and fame, were the
all consuming passions. Every Friday night our “crew” would spend about an hour
and half preparing for the nights festivities by drinking while the rhythmic
drums of the then kings of hip hop pulsated from car and house stereos.
